Festival trains sell out fast, and December is next. If you are planning a Christmas holiday, a New Year trip or a winter visit home, the one date that matters is not the day you travel. It is the morning your booking window opens. Indian Railways lets you reserve 60 days ahead, and popular trains can sell out quickly once it opens, so knowing the exact date is half the battle.

How the 60-day window works

The standard advance reservation period (ARP) on Indian Railways is 60 days. The detail that catches people out, according to LastBerth's explainer, is that the count excludes the day of departure. To find your opening date, subtract 60 calendar days from your travel date. Booking opens at 8:00 AM IST.

Here are the opening dates for some popular December and New Year travel dates, worked out with that rule:

  • Travel on 5 December 2026: booking opens Tuesday 6 October

  • Travel on 19 December: opens Tuesday 20 October

  • Travel on 24 December: opens Sunday 25 October

  • Travel on 25 December: opens Monday 26 October

  • Travel on 31 December: opens Sunday 1 November

  • Travel on 1 January 2027: opens Monday 2 November

If you write down only one thing from this article, make it your own date: subtract 60 days from it, put it in your calendar, and set an alarm for 7:45 AM.

Short-distance intercity services such as the Taj Express and Gomti Express have shorter windows of 15 to 30 days, per the same explainer, so check the window for your specific train.

Link your Aadhaar before the big day

The most important recent change is who can book on the opening day. Indian Railways has been restricting online booking of general reserved tickets on the first day of the window to Aadhaar-authenticated IRCTC accounts. The rule started in October 2025 with a morning window and has been extended in phases. Reports from Organiser say the plan is to extend the Aadhaar-authenticated window up to midnight, and advise linking Aadhaar to your IRCTC account in advance. Check IRCTC's current notice for the exact hours that apply now.

According to Outlook Traveller, the steps are:

  1. Log in to your IRCTC account and go to My Profile or the Aadhaar linking option.

  2. Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number.

  3. Verify with the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.

Booking at station reservation counters is not affected by this rule. Tatkal booking has needed Aadhaar authentication since July 2025.

Tatkal timings

Tatkal opens one day before departure: at 10:00 AM for AC classes and 11:00 AM for non-AC classes, as listed by HelloRail. Treat Tatkal as a backup, not a plan, especially in peak weeks.

Festive specials and how much demand there is

Railways have added special trains around the festival season. HelloRail's roundup counts 432 special trips between 4 September and 30 November, and reports that Northern Railway proposed nearly doubling Tatkal capacity for Diwali on some high-demand routes, from 6,500 to over 12,000 seats. Figures for special trains vary between zones and reports, so verify a specific train on the IRCTC site or the National Train Enquiry System.

The same roundup says IRCTC processed 2,006,353 tickets on 7 September 2026, a record. That gives a sense of why opening mornings are so competitive.

A practical booking morning checklist

  • The night before: log in once to confirm your password works, your Aadhaar is linked and your saved passenger list is correct.

  • Payment ready: keep your preferred payment method set up and check your bank's daily limits.

  • Have a plan B train and date: search for alternatives on the same route, including a nearby station or a day earlier or later.

  • Book at 8:00 AM sharp, but do not panic: if the site is slow, refresh once, not ten times.

  • Check waiting-list status: a long waiting list on a busy date is a warning, so check your position and your alternatives before you commit.

  • Use official channels only: book through the IRCTC website or app or a station counter. Never share your OTP, or pay someone claiming to hold "confirmed" tickets.

If you missed the window

Look for special trains added later, try a different station or date, check cancellation charts closer to departure, and keep an alternative such as a bus or a flight in mind. Confirm prices and timings on the operator's own site before you pay.

Rules and timings on Indian Railways change often. The details above are as reported on 30 September 2026, so check the IRCTC website or app for the latest.
